Why I Support New Russia Sanctions
Dear friend,
This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou writing to you about the continuing tragic war in Ukraine waged by Russia. This week, President Donald Trump signaled that he would support sending new support to Ukraine. This is long overdue.
For three and a half years, Russia has been committing mass murder and atrocities against the Ukrainian people. Recently, Russia has intensified its attacks on civilians. The nightly bombings by Russia are intended to rain terror on Ukrainians and designed to kill women, children, and other innocent people.
Ukraine has endured some of the worst violence since World War II, and against all odds has survived. The endurance of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people is one of the most important stories of our lifetimes.
The present and future of Ukraine matter deeply to me. In our vibrant district, we are blessed to have one of the largest Ukrainian communities in our nation. The anguish in our community is devastating to me.
For months now, the Trump administration’s policies supporting Ukraine have been woefully inadequate. The public meeting at the White House between Trump and Vice President Vance and Ukraine’s President was an embarrassment to America. The recent withholding of support for Ukraine by our own Department of Defense has been shameful. That is why I helped lead over 50 of my colleagues demanding that the administration immediately resume shipments of vital munitions to Ukraine, which they later did.
President Trump’s policy discussions with Vladimir Putin have been worse than pointless: they have simultaneously delayed aid to Ukraine while emboldening Russia to continue mass murdering Ukrainians. Trump himself recently acknowledged this reality when he said Russia’s dictator was full of “bullshit” whose promises “turn out to be meaningless.” I couldn’t agree more.
While I want peace, peace should not be contingent on whatever terms Russia dictates. I hope and pray that President Trump will now actively support Ukraine and oppose Russia.
But I am not holding my breath on this issue. As a result, I am supporting new legislation that would authorize powerful sanctions against Russia. Once law, this bipartisan bill would allow America to strangle Putin’s most important economic lifeline: selling Russian oil. Support in Congress for the bill is strong. I am pushing my colleagues to pass this law as soon as possible.
I know, for most of you, there are many issues here in America that matter more to you than a war in Europe. I am focused on these issues in Congress. Nevertheless, the fate of Ukraine is immensely important to America. Our support for Ukrainians' survival must continue.

Le escribe la congresista Nellie Pou para hablarle sobre la trágica y continua guerra en Ucrania, iniciada por Rusia. Esta semana, el presidente Donald Trump dio señales de que apoyaría el envío de nueva ayuda a Ucrania. Ese apoyo ya venía siendo demasiado necesario desde hace tiempo.
Desde hace más de tres años, Rusia ha estado cometiendo asesinatos masivos y atrocidades contra el pueblo ucraniano. Recientemente, los ataques contra civiles se han intensificado. Los bombardeos nocturnos están diseñados para sembrar el terror y provocar la muerte de mujeres, niños y personas inocentes.
Ucrania ha soportado una de las violencias más brutales desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial y, contra todo pronóstico, ha logrado resistir. La fortaleza del pueblo ucraniano es, sin duda, una de las historias más importantes de nuestra época.
El presente y el futuro de Ucrania me importan profundamente. En nuestro distrito, vibrante y diverso, tenemos el privilegio de contar con una de las comunidades ucranianas más grandes del país. El dolor que vive nuestra comunidad local me conmueve profundamente.
Durante meses, las políticas del gobierno del presidente Trump han sido lamentablemente insuficientes en su apoyo a Ucrania. La reciente reunión pública en la Casa Blanca entre Trump, el vicepresidente Vance y el presidente de Ucrania fue un momento vergonzoso para Estados Unidos. La decisión del Departamento de Defensa de retener ayuda para Ucrania también ha sido una gran decepción. Por eso, trabajé junto a más de 50 colegas del Congreso para exigir que se reanudaran de inmediato los envíos de municiones vitales para Ucrania, lo cual finalmente se logró.
Las conversaciones entre el presidente Trump y Vladimir Putin no solo han sido inútiles, sino perjudiciales: han retrasado la entrega de ayuda a Ucrania y han envalentonado a Rusia a continuar con sus crímenes. El propio Trump lo reconoció recientemente al decir que el dictador ruso estaba “lleno de mentiras” y que sus promesas “no significan nada”. Estoy totalmente de acuerdo.
Quiero la paz, pero no una paz impuesta por las condiciones de Rusia. Espero y rezo para que el presidente Trump decida apoyar activamente a Ucrania y se oponga firmemente a Rusia.
Sin embargo, no me hago ilusiones. Por eso estoy apoyando una nueva legislación que impondría sanciones severas contra Rusia. Este proyecto de ley bipartidista permitiría a Estados Unidos atacar la fuente principal de ingresos del régimen de Putin: la venta de petróleo ruso. El apoyo en el Congreso a esta iniciativa es sólido, y estoy impulsando su aprobación cuanto antes.
Sé que para muchos de ustedes hay temas aquí en nuestro país que les preocupan más que una guerra en Europa. Yo también estoy trabajando arduamente en esos asuntos. Pero el destino de Ucrania es crucial para Estados Unidos. Nuestro compromiso con la supervivencia del pueblo ucraniano debe continuar.
