Why I Oppose the Budget Bill in Congress
Dear Friend:
The House will soon consider a massive $4 trillion budget bill being offered by Republicans. I will vote against the bill and I want to explain why.
First, the tax relief in the bill is not distributed fairly to all Americans. The bill is heavily skewed to give huge breaks to the wealthiest one-tenth of one percent of Americans. Any tax cuts should favor the middle class and this bill does not do that.
Second, the legislation will make heavy cuts to Medicaid. In 2023, Medicaid covered nearly 70 million Americans, including 39 percent of all the children in our country. The bill will slash Medicaid in ways that could ultimately revoke health care coverage from millions of our poorest Americans. That is unacceptable to me.
Third, the cost of the bill is enormous. Current estimates are that it will cost over $4 trillion. That is $4,000,000,000,000 of taxpayer money, much of which will not be paid for and so add to our ballooning national debt. That is irresponsible.
Fourth, I believe the process that has produced this massive bill has been flawed. The bill was not written in open hearings, but behind closed doors. Committees have held marathon hearings in the dead of night. Input, debate, and bipartisanship have been nonexistent. That is not how hugely important laws should be written.
One part of the bill I do support involves the state and local tax deduction, or SALT. The capping of the SALT deduction by congressional Republicans in 2017 has caused terrible pain on New Jerseyans. I believe the cap should be abolished completely, but raising the SALT cap will be good for middle class members of our state and I support that. But I cannot vote for the bill itself because its negative elements heavily outweigh this positive provision.
Taken together the Republican budget package will do more harm than good.
Republicans have officially named their legislation The One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It is big, but it is not beautiful. Its provisions are cruel, expensive, and will hurt millions of Americans. I will vote against it.

Pronto la Cámara de Representantes considerará un enorme proyecto de ley presupuestaria de 4 billones de dólares presentado por los republicanos. Yo votaré en contra de este proyecto y quiero explicar por qué.
En primer lugar, los beneficios fiscales que propone no se distribuyen de manera justa entre todos los estadounidenses. Está fuertemente inclinado a otorgar enormes recortes a los estadounidenses más ricos —el 0.1% de la población. Cualquier recorte de impuestos debería beneficiar a la clase media, y este proyecto no lo hace.
En segundo lugar, la legislación propone recortes significativos a Medicaid. En 2023, Medicaid brindó cobertura a casi 70 millones de personas, incluyendo al 39% de todos los niños del país. Este proyecto recortaría Medicaid de forma tan drástica que podría dejar sin cobertura médica a millones de los estadounidenses más pobres. Para mí, eso es inaceptable.
En tercer lugar, el costo del proyecto es enorme. Las estimaciones actuales calculan que superará los 4 billones de dólares. Es decir, $4,000,000,000,000 del dinero de los contribuyentes, gran parte del cual no está financiado, lo que incrementará aún más nuestra ya creciente deuda nacional. Eso es irresponsable.
En cuarto lugar, considero que el proceso mediante el cual se redactó este proyecto ha sido defectuoso. No se elaboró en audiencias públicas, sino a puerta cerrada. Los comités han realizado audiencias maratónicas en plena madrugada. No ha habido espacio para participación, debate ni colaboración bipartidista. Así no deberían redactarse leyes de tal magnitud.
Hay una parte del proyecto que sí apoyo: la deducción de impuestos estatales y locales, conocida como SALT. El límite impuesto a esta deducción por los republicanos en 2017 ha causado un gran daño a los habitantes de Nueva Jersey. Creo que ese límite debe eliminarse por completo, pero al menos aumentarlo sería beneficioso para los miembros de la clase media en nuestro estado, y por eso respaldo esa parte. Aun así, no puedo votar a favor del proyecto en su conjunto, porque sus aspectos negativos superan con creces esa disposición positiva.
En conjunto, el paquete presupuestario republicano hará más daño que bien.
Los republicanos han llamado oficialmente a su propuesta legislativa La Gran Ley Hermosa. Es grande, pero no es hermosa. Sus medidas son crueles, costosas y perjudicarán a millones de estadounidenses. Por eso votaré en contra.
