Standing With Governor Sherrill for Gateway

Dear Friend,

This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou writing to you about my recent visit to Secaucus Junction, where I joined Governor Mikie Sherrill to speak out against the suspension of the Gateway Tunnel Project.

The Gateway Tunnel is vital to maintaining reliable rail service between New Jersey and New York and to supporting thousands of construction and skilled labor jobs across our region.

Halting or delaying this project would have serious economic consequences. It would disrupt commuters, strain businesses, and jeopardize our state’s long-term growth. If the funding freeze stays in effect, over 1,000 engineers and construction workers will lose their jobs. Gateway is not simply a transportation project: it is an economic lifeline for North Jersey and the broader region. 

I am a broken record on this, but let me be clear: finishing the Gateway Tunnel is a matter of existential importance to New Jersey. New Jersey’s future hinges on its completion.

As New Jersey’s only Democrat on the House Transportation Committee, I have emphasized from day one that completing Gateway is essential for our state’s competitiveness and stability. Infrastructure investment supports workers, strengthens mobility, and prepares our region for the future.

To that end, I proudly support Governor Sherrill’s lawsuit to restore the frozen funds. Last week, a federal judge ruled to allow the project to resume and I am confident New Jersey will ultimately prevail in court. We have the law, the state’s interests, and common sense on our side.

Standing together, we made clear that New Jersey remains united in pushing for this project to move forward. This tunnel should not be used as a political football. Reliable transportation infrastructure is critical to our economy and to the daily lives of residents. 

I will continue working alongside state leaders and my colleagues in Congress to ensure this project continues. The future of the entire region depends on it.

Le escribe la congresista Nellie Pou para informarle sobre mi reciente visita a Secaucus Junction, donde me uní a la gobernadora Mikie Sherrill para pronunciarnos en contra de la suspensión del Proyecto del Túnel Gateway.

El Túnel Gateway es fundamental para mantener un servicio ferroviario confiable entre Nueva Jersey y Nueva York, y para respaldar miles de empleos en la construcción y en oficios especializados en toda nuestra región.

Detener o retrasar este proyecto tendría graves consecuencias económicas. Afectaría a los viajeros diarios, presionaría a los negocios y pondría en riesgo el crecimiento a largo plazo de nuestro estado. Si se mantiene la suspensión de fondos, más de 1,000 ingenieros y trabajadores de la construcción perderán sus empleos. Gateway no es solo un proyecto de transporte: es un salvavidas económico para el norte de Nueva Jersey y para toda la región.

Puede que suene repetitiva, pero quiero ser clara: terminar el Túnel Gateway es de importancia existencial para Nueva Jersey. El futuro de nuestro estado depende de su finalización.

Como la única demócrata de Nueva Jersey en el Comité de Transporte de la Cámara de Representantes, he dejado claro desde el primer día que completar Gateway es esencial para la competitividad y estabilidad de nuestro estado. Tenemos la ley, los intereses del estado y el sentido común de nuestro lado.

Al estar unidos, dejamos claro que Nueva Jersey sigue firme en su compromiso de que este proyecto avance. Este túnel no debe convertirse en una herramienta política. Una infraestructura de transporte confiable es esencial para nuestra economía y para la vida diaria de los residentes.

Seguiré trabajando junto a líderes estatales y mis colegas en el Congreso para asegurar que este proyecto continúe. El futuro de toda la región depende de ello.
