Paying Our Troops During the Shutdown

This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou writing to update you about the impact of the government shutdown on our troops.

I have been visiting across our district to talk with our residents and everyone is rightly fed up with the shutdown. Congress has now been out of session for over two straight weeks. Federal employees are furloughed home or working without pay, including our air traffic controllers and airport security officers.

In addition, America’s military servicemembers are also working without pay.

Our servicemembers selflessly put their lives on the line to protect our country and serve our nation. At a time when approximately one-quarter of military families are already facing food insecurity and struggling to make ends meet, we cannot afford to let dysfunction in Washington hurt our service members and their families.

I am using my office to try to get our troops paid on time and in full. I have joined 78 of my House colleagues calling on the House Speaker to immediately reopen Congress specifically to take a vote to ensure our military personnel get paid what they are owed.

There is precedent for this action. During the 2013 government shutdown, Congress successfully passed the Pay Our Military Act, which provided pay for members of the Armed Forces during a government shutdown. We should do the exact same now.

Unfortunately, as of now the House Speaker has refused to bring the House back and reopen the government, even to pass a law to pay our military. I will keep pressuring him to do right by our troops.

In the meantime, I continue to work with my colleagues in good faith to halt this shutdown. We must reopen the government, but at the same time end threats to Americans’ health care.

Congress must work across the aisle and in good faith to end this shutdown, find common ground, protect Americans’ health care, and ensure there is no undue harm to our service members and their families.

This is a moment not only to support our troops, but also to show the American people and the world that our service members and our national security are above politics and the bedrock of our nation.

Existe un precedente claro. Durante el cierre del gobierno en 2013, el Congreso aprobó con éxito la Ley para Pagar a Nuestro Personal Militar, que garantizó el pago a los miembros de las Fuerzas Armadas durante un cierre gubernamental. Debemos hacer exactamente lo mismo ahora.
