Kearny Lead Pipe Award

This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou writing to let you know about a new nearly $1 million federal grant our congressional office has secured for Kearny. 

This new funding will be used by Kearny to remove and replace lead pipes in the town. Every year for nearly the entire next decade, Kearny is replacing about 550 lead pipe water services. The pipes that will be replaced thanks to this grant include those covering Brighton Avenue, Rose Street, Park Avenue, and Park Place. 

The timing for this award is important. Over the last week, 200,000 members of our district have had little or no water after a water pipe burst in Passaic County. Many have had to boil their own water. This has created enormous burdens on seniors and families. 

Since the crisis began, my office has worked with local, county, state, and federal leaders to bring critical aid to our neighbors to end this tragedy. Our phones have been open to field calls and provide assistance to constituents in need. 

It is unacceptable that Americans in 2025 are relying on pipes that date back to the 19th century. Far too many towns and cities across America have antiquated water systems, making lead and copper pipes a continuing threat to the well being of millions, especially children. 

Federal investments are essential to help tackle the job of replacing ancient water pipes and this award to Kearny will directly benefit our neighbors and strengthen the water infrastructure for all 40,000 residents of the community. Kearny is wisely undertaking work to replace its pipes over the next decade and I am happy this federal support will help them do the job.

In Congress, I am a member of the House Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment. On the panel I am uniquely positioned to focus on water and our pipes. While I have only been in Congress for a few months, securing funding for water infrastructure has been one of my key committee priorities. 

Clean water is the foundation of any society. There is no good reason why any members of our communities should be faced with shortages of clean and safe drinking water – especially because of old pipes.

Estos fondos serán usados por Kearny para eliminar y reemplazar las tuberías de plomo en la ciudad. Durante casi toda la próxima década, Kearny estará reemplazando alrededor de 550 conexiones de agua con tuberías de plomo cada año. El momento de este apoyo es muy importante. Durante la última semana, 200,000 personas de nuestro distrito han tenido poco o nada de agua debido a una rotura en una tubería en el condado de Passaic. Muchas familias han tenido que hervir su propia agua. Esto ha generado enormes dificultades para los adultos mayores y las familias.

Desde que comenzó la crisis, mi oficina ha trabajado con líderes locales, del condado, estatales y federales para traer ayuda crítica a nuestros vecinos y poner fin a esta tragedia. Nuestros teléfonos han estado abiertos para recibir llamadas y brindar asistencia a los constituyentes que la necesitan.

Es inaceptable que en 2025 los estadounidenses dependan de tuberías que datan del siglo XIX. Demasiadas ciudades y pueblos en todo Estados Unidos tienen sistemas de agua anticuados, lo que convierte las tuberías de plomo y cobre en una amenaza constante para la salud de millones de personas, especialmente los niños.

Las inversiones federales son esenciales para afrontar la tarea de reemplazar estas tuberías antiguas, y esta subvención para Kearny beneficiará directamente a nuestros vecinos y fortalecerá la infraestructura hídrica para los 40,000 residentes de la comunidad. Kearny está haciendo un trabajo inteligente al planificar el reemplazo de sus tuberías durante la próxima década, y me alegra que este apoyo federal les ayude a lograrlo.

En el Congreso, soy miembro del Subcomité de Recursos Hídricos y Medio Ambiente de la Cámara de Representantes. En este panel tengo una posición única para centrarme en el agua y nuestras tuberías. Aunque llevo solo unos meses en el Congreso, asegurar fondos para infraestructura hídrica ha sido una de mis prioridades principales en los comités.

El agua limpia es la base de toda sociedad. No hay ninguna razón válida para que alguien en nuestras comunidades enfrente escasez de agua potable limpia y segura — especialmente por culpa de tuberías antiguas.
