I Voted No to Funding ICE
This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou writing to update you why I voted yesterday against funding the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.
I voted no because the bill provides no new guardrails against ICE’s current enforcement and fails to guarantee due process rights and the safety and security of American citizens who continue to be harassed, detained, assaulted, and even killed by masked DHS agents.
Under Secretary Kristi Noem, the Homeland Security Department has undermined public trust in law enforcement. The daily reports and images of ICE agents roaming the streets of American cities has terrified our nation.
As a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, I have pushed to hold the administration accountable. At a hearing this week, I was flabbergasted and outraged that a top Department official repeatedly refused to answer my question on who was the legitimate winner of the 2020 presidential election.
Election denialism undermines public confidence in our institutions and weakens democracy itself. The Homeland Security Department has served a vital function for nearly a generation since the 9/11 terror attacks. The control of department policy by extremists threatens to undo decades of vital work. Congress has a responsibility to take real and effective action to root out corruption, not fertilize it with fresh dollars.
The violent death of Renee Good has shocked the world. The movement of masked federal agents into cities across America over the last year is one of the most disturbing ongoing policy measures of this administration.
Many of our residents are asking how Congress could fund these policies. I cannot.
Le escribo para explicarle por qué voté ayer en contra de financiar al Departamento de Seguridad Nacional y al Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas, conocido como ICE.
Voté no porque el proyecto de ley no incluye nuevas salvaguardas contra las prácticas actuales de ICE y no garantiza el debido proceso ni la seguridad de los ciudadanos estadounidenses que continúan siendo acosados, detenidos, agredidos e incluso asesinados por agentes del DHS que actúan con el rostro cubierto.
Bajo el liderazgo de la Secretaria Kristi Noem, el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional ha socavado la confianza pública en las fuerzas del orden. Los informes e imágenes diarias de agentes de ICE patrullando las calles de ciudades estadounidenses han aterrorizado a nuestra nación.

El negacionismo electoral socava la confianza pública en nuestras instituciones y debilita la democracia misma. El Departamento de Seguridad Nacional ha cumplido una función vital durante casi una generación desde los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre. Permitir que extremistas controlen su política amenaza con deshacer décadas de trabajo esencial. El Congreso tiene la responsabilidad de tomar medidas reales y efectivas para erradicar la corrupción, no de alimentarla con nuevos fondos.
La muerte violenta de Renée Good ha conmocionado al mundo. El despliegue de agentes federales encapuchados en ciudades de todo el país durante el último año es una de las políticas más perturbadoras de esta administración.
