I Voted to Halt the Iran War

Dear Friend,

This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou writing to you about my vote this week to halt the war with Iran. 

The Defense Secretary says our commitment to our objectives grows as our advantages grow. The Secretary of State says this isn’t even a war. And President Trump says he’ll help choose the next leader of Iran. What’s the plan? What are our goals?

Let me be clear: we cannot send our brave men and women into war based on a feeling, without a clear plan, real justification, or any imminent threat to our nation. America is still living with the consequences of Iraq and Afghanistan. We cannot make that mistake again.

For generations, Congress has abdicated its responsibility under the Constitution to declare war, and in so doing, has directly contributed to the rise of an unconstrained executive and a weakened Congress. Our action today seeks to restore critical balance to the balance of powers.

The Iranian regime has been one of the foremost incubators of terrorism in the world for nearly 50 years. The regime has murdered countless innocent people across the globe, including Americans. Weeks ago, it butchered tens of thousands of Iranians peacefully demanding a better future. The Iranian regime’s quest for nuclear bombs constitutes one of the gravest threats to the world. The ultimate demise of this regime, when it arrives, will be a great day for millions of Iranians, for the United States, and for the cause of freedom across the world. 

But this conflict can only continue with the constitutional consent of Congress. Which is why I voted for the Wars Powers Resolution bill.

El secretario de Defensa dice que nuestro compromiso con los objetivos crece a medida que crecen nuestras ventajas. El secretario de Estado dice que esto ni siquiera es una guerra. Y el presidente Trump afirma que ayudará a elegir al próximo líder de Irán. ¿Cuál es el plan? ¿Cuáles son nuestros objetivos?

Quiero ser clara: no podemos enviar a nuestros valientes hombres y mujeres a la guerra basándonos en corazonadas, sin un plan claro, sin una justificación real o sin una amenaza inminente para nuestra nación. Estados Unidos aún vive con las consecuencias de Irak y Afganistán. No podemos cometer ese error otra vez.

Durante generaciones, el Congreso ha dejado de ejercer su responsabilidad constitucional de declarar la guerra y, al hacerlo, ha contribuido directamente al fortalecimiento de un poder ejecutivo sin límites y al debilitamiento del propio Congreso. Nuestra acción de hoy busca restaurar el equilibrio esencial entre los poderes del gobierno.

Durante casi 50 años, el régimen iraní ha sido uno de los principales promotores del terrorismo en el mundo. El régimen ha asesinado a innumerables personas inocentes en todo el planeta, incluidos estadounidenses. Hace apenas unas semanas, reprimió con brutalidad a decenas de miles de iraníes que exigían pacíficamente un futuro mejor. La búsqueda del régimen por desarrollar armas nucleares representa una de las amenazas más graves para el mundo. El fin de este régimen, cuando llegue, será un gran día para millones de iraníes, para Estados Unidos y para la causa de la libertad en todo el mundo.

Pero este conflicto solo puede continuar con el consentimiento constitucional del Congreso. Por eso voté a favor de la Resolución de Poderes de Guerra.
