Flight Safety and the Government Shutdown

This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou writing to update you about the impact of the government shutdown on American air travel.

I have been visiting across our district to talk with residents and tour places being negatively impacted by the shutdown. Over and over our residents have been distressed about possibly losing their health care or paying higher premiums because of this shutdown.

This week, I traveled to Teterboro Airport in our district to speak with air traffic controllers. Despite working in one of the most stressful jobs imaginable, America’s air traffic controllers are currently working without pay, along with all other federal workers.

I wanted to thank the traffic controllers at Teterboro, Newark Liberty, and across America, for working under difficult conditions. Without them, it would be impossible to keep America’s skies and America’s flyers safe.

One controller I spoke with expressed her dismay at working without pay, wondered how she would manage her bills, and said the shutdown makes their pressure-packed jobs even harder.

These trusted federal workers deserve to be compensated for keeping our flights safe. And American travelers deserve the peace of mind that comes with fully staffed air traffic control towers.

It is clear that this shutdown is affecting real people and is having real consequences. The longer this shutdown goes on, the higher the negative impact on our federal employees working without pay to keep America safe.

I am not backing down until we find a compromise that reopens the government, lowers your costs and keeps Americans safe.

Quiero agradecer a los controladores de tráfico aéreo de Teterboro, Newark Liberty y de todo el país por su dedicación bajo condiciones tan difíciles. Sin ellos, sería imposible mantener seguros nuestros cielos.

Uno de los controladores expresó su angustia por trabajar sin sueldo y su preocupación por cómo pagará sus cuentas, señalando que el cierre hace aún más difícil un trabajo ya extremadamente estresante.

Estos trabajadores federales merecen ser compensados por mantener nuestros vuelos seguros, y los viajeros merecen la tranquilidad que brinda un sistema plenamente operado.

El cierre está afectando a personas reales con consecuencias reales. Mientras más se prolongue, mayor será el impacto negativo. No daré marcha atrás hasta que logremos un acuerdo que reabra el gobierno, reduzca costos y mantenga a los estadounidenses seguros.
