Fighting Firefighter Cancer
Dear Friend:
Recently, I led my colleagues in Congress seeking money for a critical cause: fighting cancer among firefighters. I wanted to highlight this important issue.
Our firefighters are always there, always standing on the frontlines.
During the pandemic, they kept our communities safe even as 180 firefighters fell to the virus. And when Hurricane Ida unleashed catastrophic flooding in our communities, our fire heroes donned scuba gear and rescued hundreds of our neighbors.
At every hour of every day, we are safer thanks to firefighters and we owe all of them an incredible debt of gratitude. Since they always have our backs, it is essential that we public leaders have their backs, too.
We know very well that some of the effects of firefighters’ service do not appear until years later. There are dangerous carcinogens lurking in the air firefighters breathe and equipment they use. The effects of these toxins are not fully known and may take years to determine.
In 2022, the International Association for Research on Cancer found that the occupation of firefighting causes cancer. In fact, cancer is the leading cause of line of duty deaths for firefighters today. But behind each statistic is a beloved public servant.
My predecessor, Congressman Bill Pascrell, helped create the first-ever national registry to advance our understanding of firefighter cancer.
In Congress, I am dedicated to continuing this vital legacy on behalf of our firefighters and securing strong federal support for our fire community and this program.
So on May 22, I led 83 Democrats and Republicans demanding $7.3 million to fund the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer for the coming fiscal year.
It is not easy to get 83 members of Congress to agree to anything, and it shows the strong support in Congress for our fire services. It is up to us to follow through and deliver.
Our firefighters put their lives on the line every day. They deserve every resource they need from Congress. In office, I will explore every opportunity to deliver support directly to all our local fire departments.

Recientemente, encabezé una iniciativa en el Congreso junto a varios colegas para solicitar fondos con un propósito crucial: combatir el cáncer entre nuestros bomberos. Quiero destacar la importancia de este tema.
Nuestros bomberos siempre están presentes, siempre en la primera línea de defensa.
Durante la pandemia, protegieron nuestras comunidades incluso cuando 180 bomberos perdieron la vida a causa del virus. Y cuando el huracán Ida provocó inundaciones catastróficas, nuestros héroes del cuerpo de bomberos se pusieron trajes de buceo y rescataron a cientos de vecinos.
A toda hora y todos los días, vivimos más seguros gracias a nuestros bomberos, y les debemos una profunda gratitud. Como ellos siempre están para nosotros, es fundamental que los líderes públicos también estemos para ellos.
Sabemos bien que algunas consecuencias de su servicio no se manifiestan sino hasta años después. En el aire que respiran y en el equipo que utilizan, hay carcinógenos peligrosos. Los efectos de estas toxinas no se conocen completamente y pueden tardar años en desarrollarse.
En 2022, la Agencia Internacional para la Investigación del Cáncer concluyó que el trabajo de bombero causa cáncer. De hecho, el cáncer es hoy la principal causa de muerte en cumplimiento del deber entre los bomberos. Pero detrás de cada estadística, hay un servidor público muy querido.
Mi predecesor, el congresista Bill Pascrell, ayudó a crear el primer registro nacional para avanzar en el entendimiento del cáncer entre bomberos.
En el Congreso, estoy comprometida a continuar con ese legado esencial en nombre de nuestros bomberos y asegurar un sólido respaldo federal para nuestra comunidad de bomberos y este programa.
Por eso, el 22 de mayo, lideré a 83 congresistas, tanto demócratas como republicanos, para solicitar $7.3 millones destinados a financiar el Registro Nacional de Bomberos con Cáncer para el próximo año fiscal.
No es fácil lograr que 83 miembros del Congreso se pongan de acuerdo, y eso demuestra el fuerte apoyo que existe en el Congreso hacia nuestros servicios de bomberos. Ahora nos toca cumplir y hacer realidad ese respaldo.
Nuestros bomberos arriesgan la vida todos los días. Merecen contar con todos los recursos necesarios del Congreso. Desde mi cargo, aprovecharé cada oportunidad para llevar apoyo directo a todos nuestros departamentos locales de bomberos.
