DOGE is Done

This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou writing to update you about reports that the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, has been abruptly closed down by the Trump administration.

First established in January under the leadership of multi-billionaire Elon Musk, DOGE was heralded by the administration as a watershed that would reduce waste and make the government leaner and more effective.

From the beginning, however, DOGE was mired in controversy. Early news reports suggested that DOGE and its staff were accessing the private financial and Social Security records of millions of Americans. I fought against these breaches from the start. DOGE’s staff members tried to circumvent Congress and the law, which I also condemned.

DOGE helped fire vital federal employees working on critical areas, including doctors, scientists, and FAA employees. Ultimately, our government has had to spend billions of dollars to rehire essential workers who were fired or forced into retirement. DOGE even pushed for major funding cuts at the National Institutes of Health, causing significant damage to research into cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and other diseases.

In fact, government spending in Fiscal Year 2025 was not only greater than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Donald Trump took office.

In my opinion, DOGE has been a spectacular failure that has done far more harm for America than good. Besides ruining a lot of good careers, doing little to improve efficiency, and harming the lives of countless people, it has also wrecked public confidence in our institutions. Its negative legacy will linger long after Donald Trump leaves office.

As a first-term member of Congress, fighting waste and making the government better is deeply important to me. DOGE’s theater will do nothing to revive our struggling economy or bring down high prices. After the majority-Republican Congress just ended a historic shutdown, I remain eager to get to work. Good riddance to DOGE.

Establecido por primera vez en enero bajo el liderazgo del multimillonario Elon Musk, DOGE fue presentado por la administración como un punto de inflexión que reduciría el despilfarro y haría al gobierno más ágil y eficiente.

Desde el principio, sin embargo, DOGE estuvo envuelto en controversias. Como congresista de primer mandato, combatir el despilfarro y mejorar el funcionamiento del gobierno es profundamente importante para mí.
