Celebrating Diwali and the New Year

This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou writing to you about our community’s celebration of Diwali and the new year.

To mark the holiday this year, I was honored to visit Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Secaucus to share this blessed event.

Each year, millions of Indian-Americans across our great nation gather with family and friends in the spirit of thanksgiving to reflect and rejoice, and to pray for health, wisdom, and peace in the year ahead. Given the challenges in front of our nation, we need all of those things in the coming year.

Diwali resonates across so many faiths and traditions who are united in a shared sense of renewal and light. This Festival of Lights is a time of joy and lively activity. But beyond the festivities, Diwali holds deep meaning.

The soft glow of the diya oil lamps reminds us that the light within each of us can banish darkness, overcome ignorance, and guide us toward truth and compassion.

That is why Diwali is a celebration of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. In a world that can sometimes feel so divided and uncertain, that message is more powerful than ever.

As your Congresswoman, I am humbled to represent one of the most diverse districts in all of America. Our Indian-American and Hindu communities are central parts of our unmatched shared diversity. I am proud to stand with you to honor the shared values that bring us all together.

May this new year bring prosperity, peace, and happiness to all of you and may your holiday be filled with joy and light!

Este año tuve el honor de visitar el Templo Shree Swaminarayan en Secaucus para conmemorar esta festividad tan especial.

Cada año, millones de indoestadounidenses en todo nuestro país se reúnen con familiares y amigos en un espíritu de gratitud para reflexionar, celebrar y orar por salud, sabiduría y paz en el año venidero. Dadas las dificultades que enfrenta nuestra nación, necesitaremos todas esas bendiciones en el próximo año.

Diwali resuena en muchas religiones y tradiciones, unidas por un sentido compartido de renovación y luz. Este Festival de las Luces es un tiempo de alegría y actividad, pero más allá de las celebraciones, Diwali tiene un significado profundo.

El suave resplandor de las lámparas diya nos recuerda que la luz dentro de cada uno de nosotros puede disipar la oscuridad, vencer la ignorancia y guiarnos hacia la verdad y la compasión.

Por eso Diwali celebra el triunfo de la luz sobre la oscuridad, del bien sobre el mal y del conocimiento sobre la ignorancia. En un mundo que a veces se siente tan dividido e incierto, este mensaje es más poderoso que nunca.

Como su congresista, me honra representar a uno de los distritos más diversos de todo Estados Unidos. Nuestras comunidades indoestadounidense e hindú son partes centrales de esa diversidad compartida. Me enorgullece acompañarles para honrar los valores que nos unen.

¡Que este nuevo año traiga prosperidad, paz y felicidad para todos ustedes, y que su celebración esté llena de alegría y luz!
