Honoring New Jersey's Fallen Heroes

Dear Friend:

This is Congresswoman Nellie Pou, and I am writing to share a meaningful moment that recently took place as we honored the service and sacrifice of a hometown hero.

My office recently helped secure a new grave marker for Private First Class James G. Davidson, a Korean War soldier whose extraordinary bravery earned him the Silver Star, one of our nation's highest military honors, as well as the Purple Heart.

For decades, however, those recognitions were not reflected on his grave marker. After working with the Department of Veterans Affairs to reconsider the case, our office helped secure approval for a new marker that properly recognizes his service and sacrifice.

PFC Davidson, known to his family as “Sonny,” enlisted in the Army in 1951 and deployed to Korea later that year. On May 29, 1952, at just 20 years old, he was tragically killed while defending fellow soldiers during an enemy attack. Despite overwhelming danger, he held his position and continued fighting to protect others, ultimately giving his life in service to our country.

On Memorial Day weekend, I joined veterans, community members, and members of PFC Davidson's family to dedicate the new marker and ensure his story is remembered by future generations. It was a fitting reminder of what Memorial Day is truly about: honoring those who never came home and preserving the memory of the sacrifices they made for our freedom.

Supporting veterans and military families has always been one of my highest priorities in office. Whether it is helping a veteran access benefits, advocating for better health care, or ensuring a fallen hero receives the recognition they earned, we have a responsibility to keep faith with those who served.

Behind every name engraved on a memorial is a life, a family, and a story. We owe it to those who served to remember those stories and pass them on. As your Congresswoman, I will support America’s veterans whenever I can.

May we never forget PFC James Davidson and all the brave Americans who gave their lives in defense of our nation.
